Why a Memorial?
On December 7, 1941, the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked. Japan's attempt to destroy the Pacific Fleet and its defenders damaged or destroyed twelve U.S. warships and 188 aircraft. With 2,403 American servicemen and 68 civilians killed, America was at war.
Over 100,000 Sea Scouts answered the call to defend our nation. Thousands more, too young to enlist, sold war bonds, collected materials, and watched our coasts.
The picture "Coast Watchers" appeared in the Houston Post toward the end of WWII. The image brings to mind the spirit of all Sea Scouts.
A Coast Watchers sculpture has been commissioned to be placed at the National Boy Scout Museum in Irving, Texas to commemorate those who selflessly served in World War II and those who continue to serve in their communities today.
About the Memorial
Payne Lara,a recognized Texas artist, has been selected as the sculptor to bring Coast Watchers to life. Payne's passion is Western art, but it is his ability to capture the energy and character of his subjects that sets him apart as an artist.
